Got its name

From King Kuru of the Kuru clan. It is believed that King Kuru chose the region near Saraswati River to establish spirituality with qualities like truthfulness and kindness.

Located at between south bank of Divine Saraswati river and north bank Drishadvati river.

History behind name It is written in Puranas that Kurukshetra is named after King Kuru of the BharataDynasty, ancestor of Pandavas and Kauravas.
Recognition through Lord Krishna preached the theories of Karma or duty to Arjun. Holy text of lord’s preaching is known as Sri Bhagvad Gita.
City’s heritage

Dates back to 2800 BC. Lord Buddha, many Sikh Gurus and other religious teachers visited the region which emphasizes the fact that the city was considered a sacred place even during ancient times.

Famous as The site of the epic battle between Pandavas and Kauravas. The battle of Kurukshetra pitted the good and the evil and from that day Kurukshetra is also known as Dharma Kshetra or the land of the righteous.
Civilization

Excavations in many parts of Kurukshetra confirms that the civilization existed even before the Harappan age. It was the prime centre of Vedic Civilization and learning. The Rid Veda was composed between 1500 BC and 1000 BC in Kurukshetra.

Area

In ancient times the Kurukshetra was spread over a circuit of about 48 KOS (approx.250 km) which included a large number of holy places, temples and Sacred tanks. Abount 135 of such places are in existence today and are maintained by the Kurukshetra Development board.

Ruler

The region has been ruled over by many empires over the years. The land was known as Uttaradevi before King Kuru came on this land and there after it got its name Kurukshetra.  King Ashok and Harsh had made Kurukshetra a part of their kingdoms during their regimes. Asoka made Kurukshetra a great place of learning. Thaneser ( Kurukshetra) remained Harshvardhan’s capital during 606AD to 647AD. The sacred tank Brahmsarover of the city have been mentioned by Akbar’s court historian Abul Fazl in Akbarnama and by Frenchtraveller Francois Bernier during Shahjahan’s era.

 

Believed that All the holy waters of all sacred rivers flow/converge into Kurukshetra's Sannehit Sarovar, at the time of Somavati Amavasya & Solar eclipse.

Those who visit this area reside here, take bath in the tanks, or die in Kurukshetra go to heaven after death.

Taking dip in holy water of sarover during Solar Eclipse is considered equal to the merits of performing thousands of Asvamedha Yajnas.

The Mahabharata states that one who dies at Kurukshetra attains salvation after death.

It is said that the Almighty God after having perfomed, divine, yajnas created the universe here.

कुरुक्षेत्रे मृताणां च पतन नैव विद्यते òò

The planets constellations and starts are subject to the danger of falling down from the sky, but those who die in Kurukshetra (कुरुक्षेत्र) have no fall on earth, that is they would not be born again.
