Amavsya or new moon’s day or no moon’s day falling on Monday of Somvar is called
Somavati Amavasya.According to Shanti Parva of Mahabharata that who take
dip in the sacred rivers and tanks on this day begets prosperity and becomes
free of disease, grieves and sorrows. It is also believed that a holy dip in the
rivers on this occasion also provides peace to the soul of one’s ancestor. So on
this day the tirthas
located on the banks of Saraswati and its tributaries in the holy land of
Kurukshetra are visited by thousands of devout for observing different rituals
. It is believed that all the Tirthas assembles in the Sannehit
Sarovar on this occasion.One can see congregration of a
large crowd of pilgrims on the banks of Barahmsarovra and Sannehit
saraover of Kurukshetra and sacred tanks
of Ram Rai and Pandupindara in District Jind of Haryana. A holy dip in the
sacred tanks of kurukshetra on this occasion is considered highly meritorious
since time immemorial. According to the Shastras, observing
silence or maun on this day is considred highly meritorious since time immemorial.
